The ISO weld matrix

The weld matrix is the per-ISO grid of every weld on a drawing, and it is the screen QC works in most. This guide covers the whole surface — how it is scoped, how to filter and read it, and how to act on a single weld or a batch.

  • Anyone with access to the project can open and read the matrix.
  • Acting on a weld needs edit access: the Complete weld, Repair…, Void…, and Move welds… actions only appear for editors. Add inspection needs permission to record inspections. If an action isn’t showing for you, ask your admin about your role.

The matrix is the Welds tab of an ISO’s detail page — it is the tab that opens by default.

  1. Open the ISO you want. Use the Navigator button on any ISO detail page, or the Find ISO box inside it, to jump to a drawing — see The ISO detail page.
  2. The Welds tab shows the matrix for that ISO. Every row is one weld on the drawing.

Across the top, a row of chips names what you’re looking at — Unit, Area, System, Test package, Spool, and Drawing — followed by the active weld count and, if the ISO has been signed, a Signed badge (with its revision). Only the chips that have a value appear.

Selecting a chip opens the ISO navigator filtered to that dimension, so you can jump to a sibling drawing in the same unit or system. When you arrived from the Navigator or a working set, the ‹ › pager at the start of the header steps you to the previous or next ISO in that set.

Directly below the header is the rollup band — a proportional bar plus counts that summarize the ISO at a glance. Each count carries its own colored dot, matching the status colors used across the matrix, so the band doubles as its own legend — never color alone, since every count is also labeled:

  • % accepted of the active welds.
  • Counts for Accepted, Pending, Rejected, and In repair.
  • NDE completion as a complete / total figure when inspection data is loaded.
  • Removed and its count, when any welds have been voided.

Removed (voided) welds are excluded from every count and from the percentage — removing a weld can never inflate your numbers. This band is your fastest read on whether a drawing is ready to move forward.

On an ISO’s matrix, neither the weld count nor the rollup band reports a figure until MaxTrax has read the welds it describes: the band is replaced by grey placeholder bars, and the count is simply left off the header rather than shown as zero. So a band reading 0% accepted with every count at zero is reporting what MaxTrax has actually read for that drawing, not the screen still catching up — with one exception, below.

On the project-wide Welds page the total weld count can appear before the band does. That count comes from the server, so it is known as soon as the server answers, while the band is derived from the welds your device has synced. Once the page has read your device’s copy, a Partial weld set note appears if that copy is behind the server, naming both figures.

Below the status rollup, a second line reports the project’s earned Diameter Inch (DI) — the industry productivity unit (nominal pipe size added up across every completed joint; see the glossary for how it differs from weld inch). It’s shown as three separate figures that are never added together: earned (credited once per made-good joint — a repair weld counts as rework, not a second earn), rework (diameter-inches on repair welds), and open rejects. A small trend strip shows recent earned progress. This is the same project-wide figure shown on the Operations Home progress metric — reading it from an ISO doesn’t scope it to that ISO; it always reads the whole project.

The toolbar above the table drives what you see:

  • Filter by status — the Pending, Accepted, and Rejected chips. Selecting several widens the set (they combine as an OR). A weld that’s in repair reads as Rejected here.
  • Search welds… — matches on weld number and weld type.
  • Sort — select any sortable column header to sort by it; select again to reverse.

Your filters, search, and sort are all held in the page URL, so you can copy the address and paste it to a colleague to send them exactly the rows you’re looking at.

The Attributes and lenses chips — In repair, Removed, and ⚠ Issues — change which welds are in view:

  • In repair — narrows to welds whose rejection has already had a repair weld issued.
  • Removed — brings voided (“removed”) welds back into view. They’re hidden by default.
  • ⚠ Issues — narrows to welds MaxTrax has flagged with a validation problem.

Flagged welds always carry a marker next to the weld number and a faint row tint even without the lens on — problems are never hidden from you. Today the active check is a duplicate weld № on this ISO; further checks (missing piece, unmapped heat, undefined procedure) light up once the weld-field sync lands.

A welding procedure gets revised over the life of a project, so “which WPS does this weld follow?” is not the same question as “which revision was in force when it was welded?”. Completing a weld pins the procedure revision that was current at that moment, and that pin never moves again — revising the procedure later leaves already-welded welds on the revision they were built to.

The WPS rev column, in the always-visible Main group, is where you read that pin:

  • rev N — this weld was welded to revision N of its procedure, and it keeps revision N no matter how far the procedure has moved on since.
  • — no pinned revision. Either the weld hasn’t been completed yet, or it predates procedure revision pinning.

A dash never stands in for a revision MaxTrax couldn’t look up. The column shows what the weld itself records and nothing else, which is exactly why it stays correct with the device offline — and why it will never quietly show you a procedure’s current revision in place of the weld’s own.

To answer an auditor’s “show me everything welded to rev 2”, add f.wpsRev=2 to the page address. The matrix narrows to the welds pinned at that revision and shows a removable Welded to rev 2 chip, so the filter is never working invisibly — dismiss the chip to clear it.

The rev filter combines with the status chips, lenses, and search rather than replacing them, and it lives in the page URL like every other filter, so it copies to a colleague and saves into a view.

The WPS rev… picker in the toolbar is how you turn one on:

  1. Select WPS rev…. The list holds every revision that welds in the current view were actually pinned to — nothing else, so a revision you can pick is always one that will match something.
  2. Select a revision. The matrix narrows, and its Welded to rev N chip appears.
  3. To filter to more than one revision, open the picker again and select another. The revisions combine as an OR — the matrix shows welds pinned to any of them — and each gets its own chip. A revision that’s already filtered isn’t offered again.

To clear a revision, dismiss its chip; the picker only adds. Clearing the last chip returns you to all revisions.

Because the list is built from the welds themselves, it needs no connection — the picker works the same offline as on. On a device that hasn’t finished syncing it can be short, or say No pinned revisions in this view, for the same reason the rest of the screen can: the welds simply aren’t there yet. Check the sync indicator before reading that as “this project has no pinned revisions.”

You can still set a rev filter by editing the page address (f.wpsRev=2), which is occasionally handy for a revision no weld in view carries — the chip will show it, and the matrix will honestly come back empty.

Select the Column groups control (the columns icon) to show, hide, and reorder groups of columns. The groups are:

  • Main — Weld №, Type, Size, and WPS rev. Always shown; it holds the sticky weld-number column.
  • Piece #1 and ASTM #1 — the first joint piece and its material spec.
  • Piece #2 and ASTM #2 — the second joint piece and its material spec.
  • Inspection — the inspection chips (shown by default).
  • Status — the projected weld status. Always shown, and pinned as the last column.

Main and Status are fixed anchors; the middle groups can be toggled on or off and moved with the ↑↓ controls. Piece and ASTM are hidden by default. Size, piece, heat, and ASTM cells show a dash until the weld-field sync populates them, so turning those groups on before then shows mostly empty columns.

A view is a named snapshot of your current filters, search, sort, and column arrangement.

  1. Set the matrix up the way you want it.
  2. Open the Views menu and select Save current view….
  3. Give it a name (for example, Open rejects) and select Save.

Reopen the Views menu to apply a saved view or delete one. Views are saved per project on the device you’re using; sharing a view with teammates and notify-me alerts are not available yet.

The Inspection column shows one chip per inspection on the weld. A chip is never color alone — it’s a lifecycle dot plus, at most, one event glyph, and every chip has a tooltip that spells out its meaning. Select Key in the toolbar for the full legend. The dots are:

  • Accepted
  • Rejected
  • Awaiting result
  • Film not shot
  • Negated

The glyphs mark Tracer, Awaiting signature, Rework, and Sampled. When you’re offline and the inspection detail hasn’t loaded, a chip degrades to a single dot reflecting the weld’s own status.

The Quick entry button in the toolbar (Editor access, and only when the matrix is scoped to a single ISO) opens a docked, keyboard-first bar for adding several welds in a row without leaving the matrix. See Quick entry for the full walkthrough.

Select a weld number to open its drawer. The drawer opens alongside the grid — the matrix stays live behind it — and shows:

  • Specification — a compact table of the weld №, ISO, type, status, and WPS revision, with a soft status pill next to the status field. (Size, pieces, heats, and execution detail arrive with the weld-field sync.)

    For a welded weld the revision field reads rev N and states plainly that the weld keeps that revision even if the procedure is revised later. For a weld that hasn’t been welded yet, it names the revision the weld will pin when it’s completed — worded as an expectation, because until the weld is completed nothing is pinned and that expectation can still change. A weld with no procedure at all shows a dash; that gap is flagged on the row as an undefined procedure issue rather than restated here.

  • Inspections — one row per inspection, in sequence order: sequence number, type, its state badge, date, technician, a link to the inspection’s own detail page, and (when a result hasn’t been recorded yet) the record-result action — plus and controls to reorder the sequence. A reviewed inspection blocks a move; you’ll be told when a move isn’t allowed.

  • History — the weld’s audit trail. Shows an honest “not available yet” note where the full audit read isn’t wired up, rather than fabricating entries.

  • Repair lineage — the chain of repair welds this weld belongs to (for example 01 → 1R → 1RC), or a plain note that the weld has no repair lineage.

  • Documents — attach and view documents for that weld (once the weld has synced to the server).

Its footer carries the actions available for that weld:

  • Complete weld — records who made the weld and when. See Complete a weld.
  • Add inspection — starts a new inspection on the weld. See Record an inspection result.
  • Repair… — offered when the weld is Rejected on an unsigned ISO. It creates a new, linked repair weld and retires the original to Repair. See Repair a weld.
  • Void… — offered when the weld is Pending on an unsigned ISO. Voiding retires the weld and excludes it from every rollup.
  • Edit — shown but not enabled yet; a full weld editor is planned.
  • The QR label action prints the ISO’s scannable label.

Repair… and Void… appear only when the ISO is known to be unsigned — a signed ISO is locked against those changes. Expanding a row with the chevron instead gives a quick read-only peek (type, latest inspection, and repair lineage) without opening the drawer.

  • Recording an inspection outcome is what moves a weld to Accepted or Rejected — the matrix and rollup update to match.
  • A repair never edits the rejected weld in place: it spawns a new linked weld and moves the original to Repair, which the matrix shows as Rejected with an In repair badge.
  • Voiding removes a weld from your acceptance numbers entirely, so use it only for welds that should never have counted.

Each row has a checkbox, and the header checkbox selects everything currently in view. Selecting one or more welds opens the bulk bar, which shows the count and the batch actions. Move welds… is live — it re-assigns the selected welds to another ISO; see Move welds to another ISO. Reset inspections, Send NDE request, and eSign are shown but not enabled yet. Select Clear to drop the selection.

The matrix is fully keyboard-reachable through the standard browser tab order — the toolbar (status chips, lens chips, search, Key, column groups, Views), each sortable column header, every row’s controls, and the weld drawer’s own fields and footer actions:

  • Tab / Shift+Tab moves between controls in reading order; Enter or Space activates the focused button, checkbox, or chip.
  • A sortable column header is itself a button — focus it and press Enter or Space to sort by it, again to reverse.
  • Escape closes the weld drawer (and any open dialog) and returns focus to what opened it.
  • A (?) help toggle next to a control — for example, beside Attributes and lenses — reveals a short explanation in place; the same Enter/Space open it and Escape closes it.

Once a row has focus, a dedicated row-to-row spine takes over so you don’t have to tab through every cell:

  • j / k (or / ) move focus to the next or previous row.
  • Enter opens the focused row’s weld drawer.
  • x toggles the focused row’s selection checkbox.

A small ⌨ Keyboard shortcuts control at the bottom of the grid lists these, plus (with edit access) the Quick entry bar’s own № ↵ to commit the current row — see Quick entry.
