NDE requests
An NDE request is how you hand a batch of inspections to an NDE contractor for non-destructive examination — radiography, ultrasonics, and the like — and keep a durable record of who was asked, for what, and when. Each request becomes a stored, queryable, recallable record on the inspection — MaxTrax does not send an email.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- You need permission to record inspections on the project (an NDE Inspector role or higher). A read-only user cannot send or recall a request.
- Know which inspections you want to request. A request targets inspections — the NDE steps that live on the welds you select — not welds directly.
- A request goes to one contractor. If you have selected welds across several contractors, split them into one batch per contractor.
Send a request
Section titled “Send a request”A request is scoped to a single NDE contractor and carries:
- Inspections — the batch to request examination for.
- Contractor — the single NDE contractor the batch is sent to.
- Technician (optional) — a specific NDE technician, who must belong to the chosen contractor.
- Film length (sometimes required — see the policy below).
- Needed-by date (optional) and a note (optional).
Each inspection in the batch is processed on its own, so one bad target never blocks the rest. When the request is sent, MaxTrax returns a split of which inspections succeeded and which failed, with a reason for each failure. Common per-item reasons:
- The inspection is already reviewed. Only inspections that are still
UnreviewedorPendingcan be requested — a passed, failed, or otherwise terminal inspection is left out. - The assigned technician’s certification is expired and the project is set to block expired certificates. See certification-expiry enforcement.
- The film length is missing when the project requires it.
A successful send records the contractor, the technician, the film length, the needed-by date, and the note on each inspection, and stamps who sent it and when. Sending also clears any earlier recall mark — re-requesting an inspection after a recall is a normal, allowed action.
The film-length policy
Section titled “The film-length policy”Whether film length is required is a per-project policy:
- If the project does not hide film length, film length is required on every request — omit it and that inspection fails with a film-length-required reason.
- If the project hides film length, the field is not shown and is never required.
Film length is a short labeled value (for example, 14 in), not a measured quantity. The policy is
readable by anyone who can record inspections on the project, so the request flow can show or hide
the field correctly without needing administrator access.
Recall a request
Section titled “Recall a request”You can recall a request before its results land — for example, to redirect a batch to a
different contractor or fix a wrong technician. A recall is allowed only while the inspection is
still Unreviewed or Pending and it still carries an active (not-yet-recalled) request.
Recalling an already-reviewed inspection, or one with no active request, is refused.
A recall clears the contractor and technician assignment and stamps who recalled it and when. The earlier request’s details — film length, needed-by, note, and the original requested-by/at stamps — stay on the inspection as historical trace. They are not wiped, so the audit trail of what was requested survives the recall.
The audit trail
Section titled “The audit trail”Every send and every recall is recorded on the inspection itself and raised as an event, so the full history — who requested examination, for which contractor and technician, when, and whether it was later recalled — is preserved. MaxTrax does not send outbound email for NDE requests; the durable record is the source of truth.
