Glossary

This is the authoritative reference for MaxTrax’s domain vocabulary — the terms you’ll see throughout this help center, in the app, and in your own QC documentation. The term list below is generated from MaxTrax’s canonical glossary, so it can’t quietly go stale as the product grows.

Term Meaning
ISO / Isometric An isometric drawing, or ISO, is a 2D drawing of one pipeline spool. Every weld on the drawing belongs to that ISO.
Weld A single weld joint on an ISO drawing, identified by a weld number with its own type, size, schedule, and status. Welds are what MaxTrax tracks from creation through inspection and, if needed, repair.
Weld Status Where a weld sits in its lifecycle — Pending, Accepted, Rejected, Voided, or Repair, plus a transitional Persisting state used only during import. See Weld status lifecycle for the exact rules for moving between them.
Diameter Inch (DI) The pipe-fabrication productivity unit: nominal pipe size multiplied by the number of joints welded, added up across a project. Wall thickness is not part of the calculation — see below for how it differs from weld inch and structural inch.
Weld Inch The actual length of a weld bead, measured around its circumference. This is a physical measurement, not the same thing as a diameter inch — see below.
Factored Diameter Inch (FDI) A diameter inch adjusted by complexity factors such as weld type, wall thickness, and material, for a more accurate productivity measure. See below for how it compares to a plain diameter inch.
Structural / Linear Weld Inch For structural welds, which have no pipe size, work is measured in linear inches of weld length instead of diameter inches. Structural and diameter-inch totals are tracked separately and never added together.
NDT / NDE Non-Destructive Testing, or Non-Destructive Examination — inspection methods such as radiography and ultrasonic testing that check a weld without damaging it.
Film Interval A section of an NDT film strip covering one or more welds. It is one of the pieces of data MaxTrax tracks when radiographic inspection results are recorded or imported.
Radiograph Log The record of radiographic inspection activity tied to film intervals and the welds they cover.
Test Package A group of ISOs and welds released together for pressure testing, with its own completion report.
Welder Lot A batch of welds attributed to one welder, used to track qualification and continuity. A lot moves through its own states — Open, Closed, and Escalated.
Welder Continuity The rule that a welder must keep welding, and passing, within a rolling time window to stay qualified. A gap longer than the window breaks continuity.
PQR Procedure Qualification Record — documents that a specific welding procedure has been qualified, including the material grade and other technical details the procedure was tested against.
WPS Welding Procedure Specification — the exact procedure a welder follows on the job, derived from a qualified PQR.
Tracer A traceability record linking a welder, a lot, and a weld, used to follow qualification history end to end.
Custom Field Extra project- or tenant-specific data a project administrator can add to weld, ISO, or other records, beyond MaxTrax’s built-in fields.
ChunkedImport The Excel import pipeline: project data is parsed, split into pieces by ISO, and loaded in the background rather than all at once.
Document Reference A link attaching a stored file, such as a photo or certificate, to a weld, ISO, project, test package, or inspection record.
Tenant One MaxTrax client organization, such as an operator or contractor company. Each tenant’s data is isolated from every other tenant’s.
Entity-Level Permission The fine-grained access-control model that limits a user to specific projects, contractors, inspection types, weld types, or approval groups, rather than granting all-or-nothing access.
CSDS Code Services Digital Solutions — the company that built and maintains MaxTrax.
Power BI Reporting View A stable, read-only view of project data built specifically for Power BI reporting, so a dashboard keeps working even if the underlying database structure changes.

Diameter inch, weld inch, and structural inch

These three terms measure different things, and mixing them up misreads a productivity report:

  • Diameter inch (DI) is a labor and progress unit: nominal pipe size added up across every joint welded (Σ NPS). It’s what pipe-fabrication productivity is normally tracked and paid against, and it does not account for wall thickness. MaxTrax’s Diameter report computes this figure directly.
  • Weld inch is a geometric measurement: the actual physical length of a weld bead around its circumference. It answers “how much welding was done,” not “how much progress was made” — the two numbers are not interchangeable, even though both get called “inches.”
  • Factored diameter inch (FDI) takes a diameter inch and adjusts it by complexity factors — weld type, wall thickness, material — for a more accurate productivity comparison across dissimilar welds.
  • Structural / linear weld inch applies only to structural welds, which have no pipe size to measure against. Their work is quantified in linear inches of weld length, on a completely separate axis from diameter inch. A project’s structural total and its diameter-inch total are never added together.
